June 6, 2013

John asks…

What are the usual rates for car insurance for a 17 year old?

17 yrs., female, driving a 91 honda civic, has straight A’s and has never been in any accidents while having a permit for almost 2 yrs.?

Our insurance person said it would be 40 a month, but this seems a little high.

I was just wondering what u think i should pay or what you pay

Administrator answers:

40 a month is actually very cheap

Nancy asks…

Why is my car insurance so high?

I’m 17 years old and hoping to pass my driving test ASAP.
My parents own a ford fiesta 2009 Zetec and both have been driving for over 20 years with clean licenses and no claims.

I’ve been on comparison sites to see what insurance will be like on their car when I’ve got my full license. But the cheapest I can find is 10,000
Surely I’m doing something wrong because I thought it would be maximum 5,000£!

I will only do around 1,000 miles and just use it to go McDonald’s ;)

Seriously though does anyone know any cheap insurance companies or explain to me why it’s so high?

Thank you!
I know I’m doing something wrong, but what? I put my voluntary excess to 500 and my mileage as 1,000 because that’s the lowest.

It was a joke about McDonald’s, I’d use the car for social reasons or being a taxi for my parents, friendly or family.

Administrator answers:

If you are going to drive your parents’ car occasionally, you do not need to get your own insurance – you are being quoted the cost of insuring a car which you own and in which you will be the main driver. Each car only has one insurance policy – and you parents already have one on their car. What they need to do is add you as a named driver on their policy – which will cost them a bit, but not as muchas it would cost you to insure your own car.

Betty asks…

What is the most economical car to buy an 17 year old?

I am looking at cheap economical cars just to get my daughter on the road to go to college, what will be the best car to buy? The insurance for an 09 reg smart city car was £4,000 which is way too much, any help please?

Administrator answers:

I wouldn’t get her anything TOO nice as a new driver, she is going to beat up whatever you get her (and don’t go into that “not my daughter” stuff, every teen is the same). I would also avoid anything too small (for safetys sake). I have seen accident photos of those smart cars where you have to look hard to tell theres a car wedged between 2 other vehicles. They aren’t very big, and since they’re made of virtually all plastic, they are no match for larger vehicles in an accident. I wouldn’t go anything smaller or sportier than a sedan for a first time driver. Cost is up to you, but probably get a lower cost car that it won’t be a tragedy when it gets a ding or dent. My first vehicle was a 98 explorer sport (a smaller SUV) and it was a great first car. Roomy, safe, ran FOREVER and actually got pretty good gas milage (and my parents got a good deal because cosmetically, it wasn’t so pretty, I think they paid $3500, but that was 8 years ago).

How much is Car Insurance for a 17 year old Boy in NJ?

I recently got my license and my mom added me to her insurance. For 1 month they are charging approximately $400. This seems really outrageous. Car is a 2007 Toyota Camry. I also have above a 3.0 average and supposedly get some kind of discount. What are your opinions on this price?

Administrator answers:

You’re a teenaged male. Your auto insurance rates are going to be obscene. You might find a slightly better rate somewhere, but it will never be cheap. Blame all the millions of teenage boys before you who got into accidents and racked up lots of tickets.

Mary asks…

How would a 17 year old purchase a car?

The car is about $20000. What would be the steps you would take (insurance, loans, etc.)? Living with parents, part time job making 7.50/hour.

Administrator answers:

You should buy a cheaper car, say around $5000. That would make a lot more sense. A 20K car at 5% interest rate for 60 months (five years), would be $377/month. Insurance for a 17 year old, maybe $200? 7.50/hour 20 hours/week is about $625/month. You’d have about $50 bucks left to buy everything else you’d need to live on that your parents didn’t provide for the next five years. Essentially you’d be working for your car, nothing else. Two choices: make more money or buy less car.

Ruth asks…

What would be a good first car for a 17-year-old?

I would like an automatic car that at least has power locks/windows. We would be willing to spend around 6000-10000 dollars. I don’t really want a 20-year-old car with 73018731287 kilometers. I also live in Canada, the cars cost a bit more here.

Administrator answers:

Yeah, I live in Canada too and cars are quite a bit more expensive here. :(
For your first car, you should look for something with 4 doors, 4 cylinders, as insurance is expensive for new drivers. You should be able to get a 4-8 year old compact car like the civic, corolla, etc. With decent kms. For that price rance. I got my first car (at 17 as well) earlier this year. I decided to go with the mazda 3. I really like it; it’s got great handling and is much more fun to drive than other cars in its class. It’s just a base model, but it does what I need it to do. One thing to watch out for is cars that seem too cheap. As I found out when looking for my car, a lot of them have been in wrecks and then rebuilt. Just make sure you check out the car’s history before you buy. And it’s good to bring someone who’s knowledgeable about cars.

Donna asks…

How much would car insurance be for me?

17 year old female with a 2000 Ford F250 in zip code 89503 with a 4.0 GPA. I know I can’t get an exact quote on here, but an estimate maybe? A general range? Thanks x

Administrator answers:

First off, ask a parent or guardian who they have insurance coverage with. Because you can get under their policy much cheaper as a minor student than having your own personal insurance. And then you just pay your portion to said parent or guardian.

Secondly, if you are not getting on someone else’s policy you’ll need to be the one that calls carriers meaning State Farm, Progressive, Geico, etc to run quotes. No one on yahoo answers can give you a quote because not only do you require a license for your state to run quotes but they also have to run the quote based on your city, state and zip. Also the fact that you are 17 years of age means you are a much higher risk because you are technically still rated as a “new driver”

The fact you took drivers education will help a lot.

When I was your age, in 1997, I had a 1984 Volkswagen and I still paid for Collision and Comprehensive coverage which was kind of dumb because I paid close to $300-350 a month in Auto insurance. My car wasn’t worth paying for collision comprehensive coverage.

Do yourself a favor and do what I did. Run quotes with all the carriers you can. Depending on the age of the car you do purchase, you may want to consider a Liability only policy (meaning you only carry coverage to protect yourself from any physical damage or bodily harm you cause to others property and injuries). If you want to have collision and comprehensive coverage to protect your car from damages occurring then you will pay more. The older the car you have, the cheaper to insure it usually.

If you don’t understand the coverages you have, don’t be a dummy and NOT research it before you buy it. Ask a LOT of questions when speaking with your agent/broker. Also, DO NOT just get the bare minimum requirements because that could be scary if you cause severe damage to someone or something. I do work for an insurance company and I work the claims portion so I see the repercussions of people who are not adequately insured.

I am merely a source of advice from one girl to another. And I am not legally allowed to tell you what you should do.

Daniel asks…

Cheapest car insurance for a 17 year old?

What is the cheapest insurance i can get for a Seat Ibiza 1.4 Petrol 2008 Automatic, No modifications made, just passed driving test but can not find a cheap insurance? Can anybody lend me a hand and guide me to the cheapest deals? I have checked all the comparison websites the best i have got is around £2,200.

Administrator answers:

If you can get (legally) insured for £2,200, then take it – that is staggeringly cheap for a 17 year old.

Most people your age will expect to pay over £4,000 to insure a very basic, 1-litre car.

Sandra asks…

How much does a car cost for a 17 year old?

The cheapest thing the moves from A to B reliably. I already know about gas and insurance, how much would the car itself cost, used whatever. I live in washington state.
I would not want to have to spend money one repairs two monthes after I got it, and I don’t care if its a hunk.
