Chris asks…

How much does car insurance cost for a 17 year old?

I can get my license anytime now. North Carolina doesn’t offer good student discount. I’m asian, will be driving my dad’s 2000 Ford Windstar with 70,000 miles. My dad says that adding me on to his allstate account would cost 1100 every six months. That sounds a little exaggerated. Is there anywhere else where I can find cheaper insurance?

Administrator answers:

Car insurance is very expensive for teenagers, when i got my license my parents had to pay about 800 more every six months for car insurance ( My parents have Geiko). If you add a new car to the policy it would be even more. It is good to get insurance at a young age because the cost of insurance will go down in time without any accidents. A good way to lower insurance is to take a defensive driver course or drivers ed., but you should check with your insurance provider before you take a course.

How much does insurance increase for a teen with an old car?

I was doing some research to buy my own car. I wanted either a 1976 dodge Monaco or a 1989 Chevy caprice. My question is, if I am 17 years old and I had this car, what is a rough estimate of how much my dads insurance will increase? I figure old cars and young drivers don’t mix well but I need to know.

Also, I have never gotten in any accident or received any tickets and I don’t even remember the last time my parents crashed or got a ticket if that helps. Shanks

Administrator answers:

Insurance rates vary with many factors. Unsure what State you are in, as each state has individual insurance regulations.

Young drivers will of course pay more in insurance, however an older car will likely be cheaper to insure than a newer one, as the risk of theft and obviously the cars value is much lower. It will also depend on your coverage options. I would not worry much about an old car causing sky high insurance rates. Get a quote online for more information.

James asks…

When my parents put me on their insurance plan, am i covered for driving each of the two family cars?

do you have to pay more to drive 2 different cars? also how much money do you think insurance for a 17th year old girl who took drivers ed would be?

Administrator answers:

With some policies, you can be listed as driver on a specific car, usually the cheapest one for you to drive (that is, the oldest cheapest car, usually) others allow you to drive any vehicle listed on the policy. It always depends on many other factors besides age and gender to figure premium. Drivers’ ed. Could be a discount, so is a GPA of 3.5 or better. Female is good. Never getting any tickets will keep it low. Call your parents’ agent; they ought to be willing to talk to you, if they want your business later.
