Ruth asks…

I just saw a commercial for “World’s Strictest Parents”?

And it began with a bunch of rules for a strict family, “no alcohol”, “no drugs”, “no cigarettes”, “no swearing” and a couple of others.

I just looked it up and here it is: http://au.tv.yahoo.com/worlds-strictest-parents/families/article/-/article/5714555/usa-gibson-family/

Now I’m not a fan of home-schooling deliberately to avoid outside influences, or not even being allowed to bike around by yourself. I think never being allowed to be in a room with a member of the opposite sex is over the top. But other than that most of the stuff on that list seemed pretty reasonable to me.

Why did they choose no smoking/alcohol/cigarettes/swearing to hook people in on the commercial, is that considered unusually strict?! Their kids are under 16.

Haha suggested category: Business & Finance > Insurance
I haven’t seen the actual show…I think they are starting with US families then moving to Australia? I’m not sure. I probably won’t bother watching it

Administrator answers:

Gee, when I was under 18, my family had rules about no alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, or swearing.

I didn’t feel that this was excessively strict. And where I was raised, this was the norm.

But it seems that nowadays, parents seem to allow their offspring to do just about anything. Some parents seem to have difficulty in saying “NO” to their children.

Allowing children to run wild certainly won’t help them with their own self-discipline in future.

Administrator answers:

You are silly. You imagine that somehow NYC does not have as much of a gang or crime problem as LA? It only manifests itself slightly differently, the nationalities change some but it is every bit as much an issue. Gangs have long since spread out from their SoCal, Chicago, Miami and NYC roots. They are an increasing problem all over the country and in the U.S. Military.

No smog?!! Now I know you’re nuts. Take a look at the skyline when the sun comes up. See that brown layer? Yeah, that’s smog. With all those highways in the metropolitan area, and 3 major airports which are some of the busiest in the country you’d better believe we have some dirty air.

Fairly priced taxis? Guess you’re never around when the city does crack downs on cabbies and finds among other illegal activities, rigged meters set to run fast.

I could go on but this is enough for now. I’d take LA any day of the week.
